JJ - The Wombats Album Cover

I will be analysing The Wombats’ album “A guide to love loss and desperation”. The Wombats are a indie alternative band like the arctic monkeys therefore they should have similar conventions.
The main linguistic feature of this album cover is in the middle of the cover, The Wombats proudly present…..A guide to love loss and desperation, this title stands out as it takes most of the room on the album cover. The type face is quite childish and wavy which connotes an immature feel. The lines around the edge of the writing which forces attention to the title. The writing is white on both titles in a background colour. The background for the band name is pink which is the signature colour for the wombats and the title is I black to make it bold.
The background is a shelf with lots of clutter on it; the edges of the shelves also have the title spelt out in small plastic squares with letters on. This connotes the teenage look and feel of the album.
The iconic signs of this album cover are the band members holding “pop” signs, they are made to look like action men or dolls in the album and are poking out behind the shelves this also gives us a clue to the type of music the band are hoping for.
The graphical signs used on the album cover give meaning to the band and an insight to the genre how they respond to social values. The wine glass that is leaning on the second shelf implies that the band are drinkers, this connotes to the rebellion convention of the indie genre. The clutter represents the band and the type of clutter it is reinforces the idea that the band are childish and there music. The disco ball has some relevance to one of the songs in the album.
The text on the shelves anchors the image with the album title. The band name with the title underneath implies it has less relevance to the album title as the album title is what the eye is drawn to. The pop signs held by the band members anchor the image as well as the title, giving the pop signs meaning.
The wine glass is an object and connotation that the audience will be able to relate to. The cluttered shelves are meant to be easily recognisable to the audience with stuff they would have on their shelves. The images of the band leave the audience with a absent present feel about the band as they are present in the album but because they are so small they are absent from the focused vision.
The band targets the audiences fashion with what they are wearing which comforts the audience as we can relate to them and their fashion statements.

  1. Some good comments Joe, particularly at the beginning. However you need to read this through as it doesn't always make sense. Post an image of what you are analysing. Refer back to the questions as you leave a bit of detail out. Your advert analysis is missing
