HG - Evaluation of music video

What have you learned from your audience feedback .

We used a focus group for our audience research, targeting young teenagers/young adults and asked between 12 and 20 people for each time we carried out our reasearch. It was important that we tested our concept in pre-production to an audience because it gives us valuable answers and can also give us new ideas that can be worked into the our already established idea. We used survey monkey (site example below) to construct our questionnaire. This is a simple site to use and has the available components to create a questionnaire that can be sent to numerous people.

examples of questions I asked:

  • ' Would you expect a indie musician to be wearing ? a) suit and tie b) tracksuit bottoms and tee-shirt c) skinny jeans and shirt'

  • ' Would you expect alcohol to be seen/present in a indie music video?'

  • 'Would you expect to see any outdoor scenes?'

The results we got back from our first audience feedback showed that we to change and adapt our ideas we had already to meet the demands of an indie music video, and give the audience what they would expect and want to see. One of the questions we asked was, ' would you expect to see an outdoor performance scene in a indie music video', the majority of the answers we received back were 'yes' unsurprisingly. This gave us the idea to do a busking scene. Our research feedback was mainly positive and gave us the incentive to try different ideas to fit in with the genre of our video.

We also tested a rough cut of the video on our class, and the main result we got back were that we needed to have more narrative scenes within our video. From this feedback we decided to add more narrative shots into our story board, giving more meaning to the actual video.

Finally we used Survey Monkey again to produce another audience questionnaire to get feedback on our final video. This final test of our finished piece to the audience showed that we needed to give ourselves more time, as the majority of results expressed that there could have been more variety on some parts of the video, and looking at this we feel didn't reach our full potential. We however noted that we managed to identify the genre well, and the audience were able to detect that.

(below, a sample of our final questionnaire)

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used blogger.com as a collaborative e-portfolio in our group throughout the planning, construction and evaluation we scanned our planning sheets and call sheets in to our blogs to show our planning process. When we took a trip to Brighton to get a feel for locations we could use. We tried out different techniques on DV cameras, including different shot types. We also took pictures for a location reccie for our piece on a digital camera to upload to our Blog. This also allowed me to try out new editing techniques in preparation for our final piece.

In our planning process we evaluated other videos in this genre. We embedded videos from YouTube of the track, then used pictures to show specific shots used. We also used multi media in our planning process such as the use of Slideboom which allowed us to upload our PowerPoint pitch. We also used embedding to display our animatic of our ideas for our video.

When shooting we used DV cameras, we used different shot techniques when shooting, we used a dolly in the performance shots, this created a smooth panning shot with a low angle shot. We used a high angle shot when the main character was in a bad state playing guitar on the steps. These to angles show the ups and downs of his life. We used the cameras to films 1 second shots of the table filling up with alcohol and bottles, to then create a stop motion effect. When we shooting in the house we used a handy cam to follow the main character but creating a relationship with the audience.

When editing we used a variety of techniques to create the final piece such as a fast cutting rate in the house, as well as a stop motion effect which we the cut with a shot when the main character comes out from the bathroom. We used many dissolves to create smooth transitions from different shots and scenes. We altered the Hue and Contrast on some of the performance shots so the lead singer is the main object in the screen. We were required to slow and speed up some shots to match lip syncing.

In the print media, we used magnet lasoo tool to cut out the guitars fro the front cover of the digipack. We removed the colour for the shots of the alley way and guitars to create a moody effect. We used the magic wand tool when we were cutting out single images from solid colours. To fill the background of our advertisement we used the clone stamp tool to match the colours and then used that colour to fill the rest of it.

JJ - Evaluation of Music Video

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Jamie T is a indy/rock artist, many videos from this genre have many performance based shots, of the lead singer and the musicians playing. Therefore when planning our video we decided that it was neccesary for our video to include our main character singing and playing the guitar. However if we look at popular indy rock videos we can also see a narrative, usually a love story of some sort. So we included refrences to a love story but only small shots to create a narrative fuzz.
We have used close up shots of our main character singing and playing guitar.
In his previous videos he references to alcohol, girls and drugs. Therefore our videos conforms to these conventions, when planning and story boarding our idea we thought that we needed to show Jamie T going down hill using alcohol as a catalyst. This allows the audience to relate to the star, this was also done through the fact that he appears a lot in the video. This also references the genre of the song.

This is a relation to the music and visuals aswell as lip syncing the words with the stars mouth movements. Our stopmotion matches the beat of the song.We matched the guitar playing with the guitar on the song because our main character was able to play the song. The song describes his fall and rise in the music industry and his career as a musician, so we screend the depressive and lonely bits in black and white and the shots that he is sucessful again in full colour. The dissolves use show the narrative as smooth transitions howeever in the drinking scenes they are left out this adds impact to the song.

We therefore included strong conventional mise-en-scene from this genre such as a indy dress style we used Jamie T's previous videos to create his appearance. When creating props we made they were appropiate for each shot, we created a messy look and feel to the video which conformed to the indy scene. There are references to british teen television shows such as Skins in the drinking scenes.

This shot shows the intertexuality of the popular British TV series Skins.

Our main artist performs in a first person mode of address in the performance shots when singing at the camera, this breaks fourth wall. This allows a strong relationship between the audience and the performer. We also use the notion of looking with the use of mirrors in the house shots.

The heavy drinking is typical of male singers, and also stereotypical of how most rock stars deal with the stress of being famous and stardom. This also links to most of the shots the lead singer being alone showing him as a lonesome person, dealing with the downfall of his music alone. This creates a image and back story of the main character that the audience of the genre will be able to relate to. The house also represents his social classs and status, showing that he is a suburbian but not someone from the lower classes. The guitar is iconic of Jamie T, therefore we have used closeups of him playing the gutiar, as well as the guitars shown in the print media.
The use of binary oppositions is apparent throughout the video, we have showed Jamies rise and fall, from his rough days going and busking trying to live on whatever he can make that way to a admired singer and successful performer.

These shots are examples of binorary oppsitions in our video.

In the print media we included semiotics, such as the front cover ofs picture of an alley way, this conotates that the artist is a suburban musician and this is typical of the genre and the artist. The guitars on the front cover are in full colour this signifies that this is a rock artist, he plays the guitar as well as showing this iconic guitar symbol, however this conotates that the guitar brings colour to Jamies life.

HG - Evaluation of music video

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts.

We had to create a band image to promote the artist through the album text. The digipack presents the image of Jamie T and the indie genre. The front cover, back cover and the two inside selves show the main theme and ideas that the video it's self also displays. This is the idea that the character himself is from the suburbs, and that music is his passion ( inside selves, close up guitar images). The inside sleeves show a close up of two guitars, showing the 'inside of music', representing a iconic instrument that he uses and showing visual motifs. These images connote that music is his salvation, and that it is a part of him.

The front covers leading line is his name, which is in large font, which catches the audiences eye. This connotes juxtaposition within the text, and pulls the audiences eyes down to the name of the album and the images of guitars that line the bottom of the image. These images connote his star persona. This was constructed using Dyer's critical framework. It shows the consumption of the audience and the paradoxes within the text. The idea that he is ordinary, however he is still extraordinary. This is seen in his untidiness, the use of black and white, and the realism within the video.

This is compared with the lighting, close ups and the authentic performance which makes him become different from the ordinary person. The front cover represents his music, the place he grew up, and the social background he is from (middle class/ suburban life). He is showing that even though he has hit stardom, he still sticks to his roots and doesn't forget where he came from. This theme is also present in his music, and is also seen in similar bands/artist from the same genre.

I took inspiration from certain photomontage artists for the front cover of the album, Such artist as Hannah Hoch . This artist uses photomonatage to create art that is sometimes political and very expressive. I liked this idea off taking different views on something and putting them together to create , in this case, a view of Jamie T and his music. (examples of Hannah Hoch's work)

The use of visual motifs is reinforced by the artist and what he means to his audience, and the character that we see. It shows what his music represents and how we, as an audience, are supposed to consume his work. The text design anchors the image, especially on the back cover (below) as it has a layout and colour pallet that matches, and fits in with the genre. Also the font that is used on the back cover is made to look hand written and represent the style of his music. The main image which is used in the background for the front and back cover represents the 'journey' that he as a musician will go on as he becomes a well know artist.

We designed this magazine advertisment to run in NME magazine. We chose to design a half page advertisement (below) which we got inspiration from a previously seen advertisement by the Dandy Warhols. The image we used in the advertisement is a still shot from our video. This shows a recognisable face/image for the audience to be able to familiarise with. The colours also run in with the video itself, and the audiences eye is drawn to his face, then left across to the text which gives you the details of what the advertisement is about.

All the ancillary texts and the video all separately have their own representation of the video, artist and music. They are however all linked together in similar ways, through the medium of colour schemes, images, and certain references. The texts link through the genre and idea that Jamie T from the suburbs and his character is laid back, but he is still a successful artist. They all link to the video through the colours that are shown and the costumes that are used throughout.

JJ - Evaluation of First Shoot

We filmed our first shoot on the 8th of November. We filmed the main part of our narrative shots with our main character getting out of bed and playing his guitar outside.

We felt it went well, we thought that the filming went well. The main character was able to take direction well and our shot position was well thought out. We found that the main problem of our shooting process was the lighting. We managed to find some lighting that kept the room bright enough however it was very unnatural. The props we used conform to the mise-en-scene of indy/rock videos. We found that when shooting outside it was difficult to keep mise-en-scene the same throughout as it was at night and the lighting changed in different areas, as well as finding somewhere appropiate with the correct background and lighting was difficult.

HG - Evaluation of 2nd and 3rd shoots.

Second shoot:

  • Our third shoot was for our performance shots which we shot in the drama hall in our school. We used this venue as it had a black backdrop and lighting already there, it was also easily available to us. This shoot went well apart form a few problems, such as using the dolly to create certain movements, e.g moving around the character whilst performing.

Third shoot:

  • Our second shoot was at my group members house as we did the main narrative shots that we needed to do, and so the main concept was to get everything done and to try and get the best narrative shots that we could. We came across a few problems, such as lighting and getting the right mise-en-secne for our genre. But we managed to work this out, so we could convey as much of the mise-en-secne as possible, and fit to the genre.

HG - Digipack and advertisment.

We took our ideas for the magazine advertisement, form the layout the Dandy Warhols used to promote their own album (below). I decided that this idea was more pleasing to the eye as the main character is seen clearly, and would be recognised, and the information that the audience needs is placed to the left and is easy to read.

HG - Location reccie

These are the photos I took for our location reccie of the Drama Hall at our school. This location will be used in the performance shots of our video. It is a dark location, with black walls and floors, and so we will use the lighting that is provided with the hall, and use it to our advantage to create a well light stage, and to create an atmosphere showing that he is playing to audience. We will use this location for our performance shots only and will use a variety of different shots to show our character whilst he is playing the guitar and lip syncing to the words at the same time, as if he really was playing.

HG - Call sheet and Risk Assesment.

  • This post shows the precautions that we have to go through before each shoot we do. This includes filling in a risk assessment sheet, and a call sheet. The risk assessment sheet involves writing about the location we are filming in, the hazards around us, identifying who and what might be harmed and why and then how we can reduce these risks. The call sheet includes writ ting out personal details such as the mobile numbers of the individuals in the group, the props and equipment we will be using, and who in the crew is responsible for these items of equipment.

  • The next section of the call sheet is the location in which we are filming, the shot number/section on our story board we are filming, the cast that is needed for that shoot, and finally the technical notes. The technical notes are the kind of shots we are doing, the main ideas we have for the shoot and what we will be using the equipment for. We take these sheets to our shoots to help us plan our shoot effectively. Filling these sheets in is vital to the safety of ourselves and the equipment we use, and also helps our shoots run smoothly.

HG - Audience research

We used a focus group for our audience research using people aged between 16 and 25. This is the age range that our music genre fits into, and so we asked questions such as ' what kind of attire/costume would expect an indie band member to wear'. The results gave us that extra bit of confidence so that we knew what we were doing was desired in a indie music video and it will be what our audience will want to see, and will fit the conventions as much as possible.

The research we did gave us the information to change and adapt our ideas we had already to meet the demands of an indie music video, and give the audience what they would expect and want to see. One of the questions we asked was, ' would you expect to see an outdoor performance scene in a indie music video', the majority of the answers we received back were 'yes' unsurprisingly. This gave us the idea to do a busking scene, were Jamie T would be in his worst stage of the video, and busking on the street for money. This shows the downfall of his career and him hitting 'rock bottom', we originally had an idea like this but our research gave us more precise ideas that we could use to please our audience. Our research was mainly positive and so this gave us a good feel to the start our film, and felt that we will meet the targets/requirements of a indie music video.

HG - Digi pack idea

Back: lenght 14cm width12.5cm. Front:lenght 14cm width 12.5cm.

Inside and Inside CD section

This is just an idea I had that we could potentially use or take ideas form for our digi-pack. I tired to get a simple background, and incorporate the guitar which is a iconic representation of Jamie T. The inside of my design is using the same background as the front cover, but i decided to add some different images for the section where the CD would go underneath.

JJ - Digipak

For my front image i will have Jamie standing with a guitar on his back. He will have his hood up smoking at a bus shleter with a clown and other weird characters sitting or standing with him. I want to convey the fact that they drink and the indy conventions in thealbum cover.

JJ - The Streets Video Analysis

I’m going to analyse a song from The Streets called Could Well be In, this band are a British rap band. I thought that this is similar to Jamie T’s music.

Using Goodwin, what are the forms and conventions evident in the video? The song is a narrative/ performance based piece. Therefore the visuals are mainly based on the narrative. We open to the lead singer, Michael Geoffrey Skinner, walking down the hall singing to the camera. We then have a shot of him ordering a drink singing about the girl he met, as this is happening the girl walks past him to the same character but from earlier in the evening. The audience then realises that the first Michael we see is narrating what happen that night. He summarises the night while on looking. There is a link with the song and visuals as well as lyrics. In the openening few scenes there is a piano player playing, we get the idea that he is in fact playing the beat of tune of the song. On the line "she didn't look too bored with what i was saying" we see the girl laughing at his jokes and smiling as he is talking. With the line "she had her fingers round her hair playing" the girl then play with her hair. "i felt my hair looks shit, wish i had it cut back last week" he then comes in to the toilets and checks his hiar. The line "if she plays with her hair then shes probably keen" this is part of chorus and most times it is played she plays with her hair.

How are the band/artist represented? Does this add to their 'meta-narrative' in any way? How does it help sell their product?
Skinner is represented in a good way which conforms to his typical look. He is seen wearing a Fred Perry polo shirt with the collar up and wearing a silver wrist chain. This conforms to this type of music and his audience. He is wearing a pair of jeans with white trainers. Even his hair is typical of the genre “Short back and sides”.

Is this an example of illustration or amplification? Or disjuncture?
This is an amplification of the band, this is the sort of video they would normally produce. They often do songs about love and girls. However in this song there is no mention of drugs where as in most of there other songs there are references or scenes of drugs. This song is a lot more light hearted than the others and this is shown by a slow cutting pace and little typical mise-en-scene.

Is there any intertextuality / references to popular culture? How does this create meaning for the audience?
There is no obvious intertexuality or reference to popular culture particularly. Other than the mention of football scores this could be considered a reference due to the people that listen to this type of music typically like football. This shows the audience that this rap star is like them in many ways.

What is the ideological discourse?
In this video the lead singer is a male and he is wearing typical youthful clothes. He has no stereotypical traits of a youthful male though. He sits at the bar having a drink. However we do see the lead singer on a date, when in the toilets he fixes his hair and then puts money in a condom machine. This is quite a "ladish" thing to do on a date so this is quite stereotypical. This video is shot a expensive hotel where there is a piano player playing the beat that we hear. Towards the end of the song we see the girl and the lead singer buying a rooom at the hotel. This is challenges his financial situation as earlier in the song it is mentioned that the girl works in "J.D Sports", so we also thing that he hasnt got much money.

How might the video be consumed?
It is probable that the video would be consumed on a major music channel suhch as MTV as when this song was releasd it was in the charts. Therefor would have a high demand from the public. This would need focused viewing as the narrative doesnt make much sense until the end couple of scenes plus the audience wants to know what happpens in the date.

Animatic - Jamie T - Back in the Game Group 6

This is our animatic. It was a useful project as we found how much time per shot we need. It has helped our overall progress of our video and how we will edit the video.

JJ - Evaluation of Pitch

When we first did our pitch we did not immediatly get the green light for our idea and we were asked to re-think some ideas. We then spent a night working on it together and we thought of some new ideas and then re-pitched and our idea was accepted. This was a great proccess as we found that our original idea wasn't as flowing as we had hoped so when we thought of the new idea we were more comfortable with the new idea.

HG - The Maccabees video analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5i3-8RWvFA

I have chosen to deconstruct a music video by The Maccabees; the track is called No Kind Words. I chose this track because it has a simple video but however is still unusual and the audience is able to get a narrative from what is seen. The track follows the genre of which we are doing our own music video to and follows some of the ideas we have created so far.

Using Goodwin, what are the forms and conventions evident in the video? Discuss links with visuals, genre, narrative, notion of looking.
The distinctive links between the visuals and the narrative is about conversing with someone, hence the title of the song, 'no kind words'. this is shown it the way that the characters in the video are sitting opposite each other and begin to talk. This slowly turns into an argument, which is evident from the mannerisms and expressions of the characters. The anger and confrontation is also shown in the animations which are displayed in between the characters heads. The animations in the video also fit in with the genre as it is a mix of retro games, and images from 'old school' games. The genre is indie which uses the idea of taking music and fashion ideas from different later eras, and making them 'in' again. There is no use of the notion of looking as none of the band members are present within the video, and there is use of two unknown characters. However one of the characters used is famous himself, Matthew Horne, which shows that this famous young man enjoys their music, and wants to appear in their video, showing the audience their connections and could almost be an incentive to listen more if someone is a fan of Matthew Horne, and wasn't a fan of The Maccabees to start with.

What visual techniques are used and why?
There is a simple layout and convention's to this video as it uses a plain black background and the characters are dressed in light coloured shirts, and are dressed to fit in the genre. The animations used also fit, in a way, with the genre, and the song meaning that even though it is a very simple video, with not a lot of things going on, its style and layout works with the track and the mood conveyed. The kind of techniques are used to give the audience a visual stimulus. The tempo of the track subtly fits in with the animations seen above the characters heads, in a way that the lyrics make it work with what the audience is seeing, giving a sense of understanding to the video. This still could be seen as a vague understanding of the video linking with the lyrics. There is also use of colours , mainly primary colours, (below), seen in in the shots of the animations that are above the characters heads. The coclours blue and red also represent the calmness of one character compared to the red anger of the other.

How are the band/artist represented? Does this add to their 'meta-narrative' in any way? How does it help sell their product?
The band is not seen in the video, however the genre and the representation of the band is still evident. This is because of the typical style of the characters used , even down to the haircut of one of the characters and the clothes worn to express the certain genre. The band is shown in a way that shows the typical conventions of the indie genre and how their audience should perceive them within the music industry. The meta-narrative is a very subtle one, as the band isn't present in the video and so how the band are and how they perform and are seen by the audience is hard to see because of the simplicity of the video.

Is this an example of illustration or amplification? Or disjuncture?

The video shows signs of disjuncture as it is not a typical archetypal video that the band would normally produce. It shows an amplification on how the band is percived and what view the audience takes from watching the video as there is still some evidence of the type of band 'The Maccabees' are and the genre of music they fir into. The amplification shown is one of childish games and the emotions shown on the characters faces, and also the argument that the two characters are in, and that the audience is connected with the situation even though the audience cannot hear the words spoken, just the song.

Is there any intertextuality / references to popular culture? How does this create meaning for the audience?
There is no obvious reference to intertexuality or popular culture as the video has a very set narrative with no performance. This means that the only visuals that the audience has are of the two characters and what they are talking about, and then the animations of the 'old school' games that are representing the characters argument/disagreement.

Could this video be considered art? Does it present any challenging ideas? or is it inherently commercial? Why is this postmodern?
The video could represent art well because of the animations shown , and even though there is little acting there is still a lot of visuals for the audience, keeping them interested and enough visuals to work the narrative out. The animations used are post modern as in comparison of some of the computer games used today, they are much more high tech. And so the images of the games that are shown are less up to date and so the audience associate the band with more retro styles, which is very popular at the moment, and also fits in well with the genre and what the band themselves are like.

How are different social groups represented through the video?
The only social groups represented are ones of the indie genre that the video is done in. This is because the only people present in the video are two characters who aren't from the band, are representing the song and what it means to the audience. The main theme in the video is confrontation, and the representation on the genre and the way that the images used show what the video is portraying.

How might this video be consumed? Channels? Ambient or focused viewing?
This video would be consumed through music channels and radio. This is because it is a well known band and is well established, and so being able to get their music played, and videos seen on music channels wouldn't be difficult for the band. The video could be either ambient or focused. However i feel it is more ambient viewing, as the video has no location, costume or character changes and there isn't a huge amount of things going on for the audience, and so could be affective for background music, instead of for the main purpose of the video.

HG - Ideas for our video

The ideas we have for our video are that we are having a performance and a narrative based video. Our venue to use for the performance sections of our video will hopefully be the Forum in TunbridgeWells. The narrative for our video is that Jamie T is seen playing to a substantial audience, showing his recognition. However when he is celebrating his success with his friends at the the after party, there is a drink problem that is evident. The celebrating and drinking progresses with his friends and so he becomes very drunk and unruly. We are going to use shots of a table filling up with bottles and cans of alcohol and cigarette buts and ashtrays, showing a dirty drunken existence, using editing to show the table filling up at certain cutting rate to make it look like a large quantity they are going through, hinting to the drink habit he has gotten into over time.
The next morning he wakes up in bed, has to run to the toilet as he has a hangover and feels like he will be sick, the bathroom door will slam in the shot of the camera, showing his urgency because of how awful he feels due to the consumption of alcohol. He returns looking ill, and picks up his clothes to wear, dirty and unshaven, he puts shabby clothes on (compared to clothes he wore when he was successful)and sips from a beer can, with a shot to the time to being early afternoon, showing he does nothing but get up later drink and try and play music. He grabs his guitar and walks out of his house, looking worse for wear about to play a gig.

The next Verse shows him playing at a gig and there is a comparison in his appearance and the size of the crowd compared to the crowd in the first establishing shots. So the crowd gradually gets smaller, people are losing interest and leaving. It is evident that he has a drink problem as while he is performing he is drinking and smoking, showing hes not as professional as he used to be , and lost his edge in a way.

In the next shots he is seen to be busking on the streets. We want to possibly use Brighton or Tunbridge Wells for these shots, sowing hes gone from being able to become really successful to nearly nothing, just a case and a guitar on the street playing to the public, and people paying him coins, and the odd person throwing rubbish in the case, laughing at him maybe. We really want to get the point across that he has hit rock bottom and lost his success and creditability. He will be looking dirty and still have a bottle of some kind of alcohol by him, putting people off and giving him strange looks.

As one of the lines is 'said the you missed her' , we are bringing in the idea of a girl who sees Jamie and takes pity because she is a fan, we see her singing along to his lyrics and showing that he is recognised. We are going to make it evident that she wants to help him and sort him out so that the public can appreciate his music again , and so he can be become the person he used to be and getting his music back out into the music industry and playing gigs.

So in our shots we will show her helping Jamie T and getting him back on his feet, so to speak. and the last shots we see are of him back on stage like he was at the beginning when he was in his successful days. We see him dressed nicely and looking happier with no drink in his hands or looking shabby. And there might also be a shot at the end of the girl in the crowd looking happy. and showing the final shots of him 'Back In The Game'.

HG - Indie mood board

This mood board shows the typical conventions of a indie band and the stereotypes that they fit within their music and fashion. There is a lot of dark clothing and long ish hair, with the occasional tattoo, this shows that the genre follows a specific theme and trend that audiences then buy into. This is showing the genre in which Jamie T's music is in , and how we will try and convey the same feel and image within our music video.

JJ - Proposal of Audience Research

We are going to use a focus group for our audience research but use three different group of about 4-5 people. The first group will be ages of 15-20 to show diferent responses. This allows us to have a better scope of shots and how different demographics interpret the music. I prefere this method as I think that visual methods will be more effective for us and we can see the interpretations better visualy. We will show the song to the group first, then ask them to do a mood board of thier interpretation of our song. We then will ask them take the mood boards in. We will then give them a piece of paper to jot ideas down such as colours they think of when hearing this song. Ideal costumes locations and so on. We will then discuss in a group and extract ideas we like.
Disadvantages of this would be that in a group people may feel the pressure of other peers to sort this we have given a tsak for them to do a indivuidualy.
When asking questions we will use a dictaphone to record answers for future reference.

JJ - Location Reccie for Video

When we were in Brighton we decided that Brighton would be a good location to set our video as the town has a very upbeat youthfull indie scene anyway so it would be a great place for our genre. The town has loads of places that are great for shooting random shots which is a key part of our video and song. We liked the town as well as we wanted some shots on the beach for the performance based shots.

JJ - Preliminary Task

This task was a great chance for us to refresh our editing and filming techniques. Although the music i have used is not the same genre is gave me a chance to practice cutting to music and lyrics. I have not edited before so this has been great practice and i feel that i will be able to successfully edit our tracks video. Whilst filming we found that we need to take multiple shots of one scene as if one shot is messed up we can not use that shot especially if we film somewhere like Brighton where it is difficult travel to.

The trip gave us a great advantage to our group as we knew before hand that we would film in Brighton so when we went we knew what we needed to film and where we had to go and then when we were there we captured additional shots and photos.

JJ - Sticks n Stones Technical Analysis

This song has no particular narrative, there are shots that give meaning to the song and a few lines are related to the visuals but mainly performance based in odd settings. As it is performance based there are many mid-shots. This allows the audience to feel connected to Jamie and we can relate to his lyrics. There are close ups of Jamies face in the faster rapping parts as well as long shots and mid shots when there is partial narrative. I feel these shots connote that Jamie has a great talent. He is an average person he is not air brushed or shot specially to make him look his best we just see his individuality. The narrative shots give meaning to the lyrics therefore connecting the audience with the lines. There are very few special effects used. The shooting was very successful it conveys Jamies image and agrees with the typical indie and British Hip/Hop conventions.

HG - Temper Trap Technical analysis

The video i have chosen to do a technical analysis on is from the indie genre, and is also a song which is pretty mellow and chilled out. And so this is similar to the sound and conventions of Jamie T's ' Back in the Game'. The video is performance based and so there isn't a huge range of shots and camera movements. The main concept of the video is all about fast visuals and flashing images and lights. Some of the main shots used are ones that show the use of sfx and also close ups of band members playing their instruments and the way they use them. I think this is very effective as it gives a unique look at the band and the song, and the way the instruments are played. Also 20 seconds into the video there is a good shot of the guitarist playing, this shot is then followed on by moving around the guitarist , to give the audience a different view of him playing it (shown below).

HG - location reccie, Brighton including photos.

On the 22nd of September we went to Brighton for a location reccie. This was a brilliant chance to begin to get back into using the cameras again ,trying out some new shot and using the location to start some ideas for our video. The weather was also really good, meaning that we managed to get some clear photos and shots. We also got some good ideas looking at certain places within Brighton as we are thinking of using the beach and maybe the lanes for some of our shots that will be included in the final product, and so the day was very productive for us.

This picture (above) shows typical conventions of Brighton with the blue sky, the pier and the pebble beach and the changing colour of the sea. This is a good specific shot/location as we are thinking of using the beach for parts of our video. Brighton is a English setting, and as the Arctic Monkeys are an English based band, we feel getting landmarks like the beach and pier for example in out video could work well.

This photo I thought was a good one, it shows the band The Arctic Monkeys name, members and a previous song title. This also shows the genre and conventions of a similar genre to Jamie T by the audience being able to see what the band wear and the colours used withing the picture/drawing.

This street (below) was very white, plain and simple which we thought looked really fresh and may be good to also use in our final video. For example with our main character walking down the middle, as it was a rather quiet street i think we would be able to create an empty alone effect, and use in our narrative part of our video.
